Prof. Panagopoulos Andreas

University of Crete, Dept of Economics

I am the Founder and Head of TECHNIS, an interdisciplinary research organisation that works on innovation and intellectual property. We bring together practitioners and academics whose work focuses on all aspects of intellectual property (IP), involving the management of IP, the legal and economic aspects of IP, its history and its social implications.

I hold a PhD from UCL, I lectured economics at Lancaster Management School and the University of Bristol, I was an RTN scholar at the University of Toulouse, and a visiting scholar at the Law Department, University of Oxford, and the Faculty of Economics and Business at KU Leuven. Building on a lifelong interest on the forces that shape innovation, I employ the tools of management science and economics to rethink the role of patents as R&D incentives. Currently, the emphasis of my work is on Artificial Intelligence, paying particular attention to the field of pharmaceutical innovation. My research has been published in management journals such as Academy of Management Perspectives and The Economic Journal.

My teaching at TIME focuses on MBE5304: Use of Innovation and Knowledge in R&D Intensive Firms.

Staff kourtellos

Ass. Prof. Kourtellos Andros

University of Cyprus, Economics

Andros Kourtellos is an Associate Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics at the University of Cyprus. He is a member of the Inequality: Measurement, Interpretation, and Policy network of the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Global Working Group (HCEO) of the University of Chicago. He is also a senior fellow of the Rimini Centre for Economic Analysis (RCEA) of the University of Bologna and member of the academic council of the Economic Research Centre (ERC) of the University of Cyprus.

His primary research interests are in the areas of econometrics, inequality, social mobility, economic growth, macroeconomic forecasting. His econometric contributions include both theory and applications using nonlinear models, model averaging methods, and mixed sampling frequencies.  He developed estimation and inference for a threshold regression model that allows for an endogenous threshold variable as well as for endogenous regressors. These models are particularly useful for the estimation of multiple equilibria and poverty traps. Recently, he employed this class of models to uncover status traps in the intergenerational mobility process. His work has been published in journals such as Economic Journal, European Economic Review, Journal of Applied Econometrics, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, and Journal of Econometrics.

Kourtellos earned a B.Sc. in Economics at the University of Cyprus in 1996 and a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2001. He held a visiting appointment at Virginia Tech during 2001-2002.
